Bringing It All Back To Bob

I know I should have been listening to Bob Dylan’s “Bringing It All Back Home” album when I was finishing this portrait, but I had just purchased the Winterland box set by Jimi Hendrix and I blasted that monster as I cranked this painting out (listening to Spanish Castle Magic in the middle of the night while zoned in on Dylan’s nose is a trip).

I redefined the line art and added more chaos to the foreground and border. I am getting used to the red, white, and blue color scheme. Very patriotic in an accidental way.

This portrait is not for sale yet, but it will be very soon. I will let everyone know when the time comes.

Bringing It All Back To Bob parts 1, 2, and 3

I have been dancing around with this Bob Dylan portrait for a couple of months now. I actually started sketching it at my old studio and it has been cooking around in my head like a spicy gumbo. So, late last night with my dog laying at my feet, I put on Highway 61 Revisited and finally made myself sit down and start this thing, my first portrait from the Compound Studio!

It was originally going to be a simple line drawing, then I started throwing the blue paint splatters on the background and it took a different path. The red was the result of a wrong button click in photoshop, and I liked the result so I left it.

Back In The Studio Sale

Moving The Studio

I finally sat down to add some color to the king! I put on The Black Crowes “Croweology” cd and started mixing the flesh color. Flesh always causes a problem. After so many portraits I think I would get it down to a science by now.

One thing that I did different on this portrait is I added a radial background pattern behind Elvis. It adds to the superstar look.

I finally started my painting of The King. I was a fan of Elvis when I was a kid but lost interest when I first saw KISS and got into heavy metal. After visiting Graceland a few years ago (every red-blooded American should) I started to appreciate him again.

This is the line art for the painting. It took a few hours but has turned out pretty good. I drew this while watching the River Monsters episode of Amazon Flesh Eaters, which scared me from ever swimming in a lake again!
